Bill Nielsen ran 100 marathons; more than 30 with Parkinson’s disease. Bill transformed people’s lives by encouraging and mentoring them to become runners. At 60 years of age, he ran a sub 3-hour marathon. For the benefit of all, he tirelessly built and maintained miles of trails in Lacombe and Fort McMurray. Most of his “leisure” time was spent in the service of others. Bill was a friend to anyone who ever tried to run any distance at any speed. He represented everything good about running. The literal and figurative trails he built are a legacy for future generations. Bill passed away quietly with pancreatic cancer at age 73.
